What is FindAFountain?
FindAFountain is a campaign to encourage people to use drinking water fountains and promote the instalation of new ones.
We aim to achieve our aims in two ways:
(1) Help you find your nearest fountain - See the FindAFountain Map
(2) Lobby Government - Encourage local government and other organisations to install new fountains and promote their existing ones.
Our Mission
“By 2012, there should be drinking fountains in the three busiest streets in every local authority area and they should be properly situated, signposted and serviced."
Why Use Drinking Water Fountains?
Each year, we throw away around 200 BILLION plastic bottles of bottled water worldwide! If you lined up all these bottles they would stretch to the moon 50 times and back!
That's a lot of bottles, and a lot of unnecessary waste... especially when you consider there's already a perfectly adequate mechanism for moving water around the world (clouds, pipes and taps!).
Most disposable water bottles are not made from recyclable material and a very low % get recycled after they are thrown away. Many end up in the sea and lakes, killing marine life who mistake plastic particles for food. For more details on the environmental impact of bottled water click here.
900 years after you and I are dead, the plastic in the 4000 water bottles we will throw away during our lifetime will still be around, causing a litter problem and killing marine life throughout that time.
What Can I Do?
The key thing you can do is to use drinking water fountains and encourage others to use them. There are hundreds of drinking water fountains in London alone. They are free, good for the environment and often very beautiful. So let's use them more and build more of them! There are lots of other ways you can help too, listed in the What Can I Do? section.
